I've mentioned this in my discord server but figured I would here as well.

Starting 1-1-2022 until around Mid June (6-15-22)

Permits issued through the ePermits System(USDA) will only be valid for one year, compared to the usual 3. This change has no affect on previously issued permits, but would impact permit renewals and new permits issued in this time frame.

I am not sure the exact reasoning as to why they are valid for a year as opposed to 3, but during a conference call with the USDA I was informed they are redoing the entire ePermits System this year. With the goal of making it more user friendly, as well as many permitting changes, which should make the entire process easier. Keep in  mind there is no set date for the new system to roll out, and due to the short staffing at the USDA, as well as what looks to be another "work from home" year the original estimate could be wrong. If you do want permits now instead of waiting for the new system, no problem being valid for one year has no affect on being able to get permits, you will just have to renew them after a year instead of 3, which is not a hard process to do(press a view buttons and your done).

Also there have been many questions as to what to designate the ants as their intended use in the permit. I brought this information up to the USDA and since then a new use has been added which is very clear to your states Department of Agriculture as to why you want a permit for the ants. The intended use added is "Pet Insect/Arthopod - Not for resale". If you are looking to have the best shot at getting the species you want, I highly recommend using this intended use during the creation of the permit application.

I have a call scheduled again later this week and will try and get more information and will update this thread as more becomes available.

Thanks for this information Garret! Someday could you make a document that explains how to go through the permit process? I see some that people have already made here in formiculture but either they're missing some of the steps or it's outdated.
