A few of these have been flying around my backyard, I caught this one yesterday.

Yea, agreed
If it seems large compared to any workers you can find (which might not be around), it could be a queen. The queens generally have slightly longer abdomens and are a bit larger from what I've seen. I've tried some unsuccessful attempts in keeping Polistes dominula founding nests before, so any help from anyone experienced in this species would be very appreciated.

From what I've read it is really hard to get them to start a nest in captivity. I had a good time keeping a small nest I captured, but even then they didn't expand the nest from when I caught it and the colonies only last a year.
