Here is an excerpt from E.O. Wilson’s “The Ants”. Not the newest piece of literature though.(1990)

Yes, the only difference is that his job was to do that and studied in college about ecology.  The majority of these forums probably hasn't (though maybe I'm wrong).

Right about now, I'm pretty sure nuptial flights have started here but I havn't seen a single ant, much less a queen. So, I want to try a black light, do you know good place to buy one?

Still way too early for blacklighting. You want nights in the 70s. For NJ, that would be after Memorial Day, I imagine. Look in the archives for good tips on what to buy.

I just checked and your pretty much right, near the 20th of may is when it hits the 70s. I'll take a walk around tommow or on tuesday, but of course schools going to take up the first half of my day so I'm not sure i'll catch many queens if I do at all.

Been keeping ants since January of 2021

Yea I am in a similar spot. I look for queens, every night at 8-9. I look on sidewalks, basketball courts, and under twigs and sticks. Then some people go to Dairy Queen and find tons of Camponotus(This early!). I can confirm they are Camponotus(I have seen them) , as they pinned them on a board for a zoology class.

Prenolepis are the only things flying now. You need temps above 70, otherwise don’t waste your time.

Yea people think I am insane when I walk at 8, and when they ask me what I am doing, I say “looking for ants” and they think I have 100% gone insane.

Check for ant nest entrances being expanded at night. If they keep getting bigger, it can indicate ant alates are in pupae or adult form.

Oh, I'm stupid lol , also I'm afraid if I mail ants the queen inside is going to get stressed and stuff if the box is thrown around.

So just don’t mail. Tell the customers to come to you. They will.

ok, I hope they won't just walk away because I made them do that. But their loss then I guess. I need this GAN thing to be perfect, no mistakes, that's why I asked so many questions :D

Reputable ant sellers like TarHeelAnts stuff colonies in a medium sized box, yet 95% of the volume is packing peanuts or some other soft material to soften blows and vibrations. As far as I'm aware THA hasn't had many shipping problems, if any at all.

Today it's 72 degrees F so should I go anting or should I wait until the heat lasts longer (the rest of the week here is in the 50s mostly)

I think for Prenolepis you want to get out around noon to 1:00, but you have nothing to lose. Definitely get out.

first queens of the year!
...not the best quality but I don't have anything else at the moment

Edit: I just went out again and caught another of I'm guessing the same sp.

oooo...that's a problem, they know bout them, their saying that as long as I keep them in the garage my parents will let me keep em (also I'm a terrible liar soooo, that would of been hard anyways), I'm sort of worried about invasions from ants and/or mites. Also what species is this?

Kind of unique species,(I am not sure), but from my opinion that head looks pretty small. Wonder what it is…
Me: temps get 60 once a month: No ants
AZ: Temps get 72 once: Two queens
Probably because Florida has a lot of species that fly in summer…
Lol

All I can say is tribe Lasiini.

I guess that narrows it down a bit.
