I recently caught a brachymyrmex patagonicus colony. They have about 200 workers and 3-5 queens.

Gawwwwd damn! Look at all that brood and all those workers! This colony is gonna get massive and I’ll definitely be following this Journal.

Update

 

I changed the outworld both because they were escaping from the last, and needed a bigger outworld. I made a simple outworld with sand and put the test tube inside

Update 2-12-22

 

I have quite a few updates.I went back to the nest and captured about 30-40 more workers that I missed. When I re-introduced them to the main colony, I made sure there was no fighting. It seemed to be peaceful between the ants. They are settling into their new outworld nicely, and I plan to feed them a cricket and give them a sugar water liquid feeder today.

 

I also noticed that some of the queens that had wings when captured have removed their wings, so there could be more reproductive queens than I thought. I believe their are now 6 wingless queens in the colony. I also noticed they have bunched up a lot more in the tube. Also, for some reason they established a trash pile at the beginning of the test tube. I'll send pictures once I can.

Yeah the only thing is that they are tiny around 2 mm, so they can be hard to contain. This is why I put the tube inside of the outworld rather than making a hole in the side and putting the test tube in the hole. They might be able to escape if the tube does not fit perfectly. Although, I think they can grow quite fast

Update 2-17

 

just wanted to note that I have seen a few males in a colony. They might have nuptial flights this season, but no queen alates yet and they are quite a small colony to do so so I don't think so.

Make sure not to release the alates into the wild since Brachymymrex patagonicus is not native to North America or anywhere else in the world except for South America. Also, Fluon barriers do not work at all with Brachymyrmex patagonicus and I can say that with a firm certainty because many of my friends and I have kept B.patagonicus and the workers always cross over the barrier easily as if there was nothing ever there. Even the queen can too.

Ok thanks for the tips. I have a firm lid on them at all times with cotton buds in the top so they can breathe and can't escape.

Update 2-19

 

I went to go and check my Tertamorium immigrans colony today, and I re-watered their nest. I saw a few Brachymyrmex patagonicus workers come from under the cotton that I use to keep up the humidity in the hydration chamber. I lifted the cotton, and there was a Brachymyrmex patagonicus queen and 30-40 workers. I believe that these are a few escaped workers and a queen from the main colony, escaped when I first got the colony. I also noticed a few eggs in the hydration chamber which suggests that the queen is a reproductive.I collected the ants up and put them with the main colony and the queen went into the test tube. It seemed like that there was no fighting, so we have some new additions to the colony! Sorry but I was unable to get pics of the sequence because I wanted to put the ants in as soon as possible. Also it seems like there is a bit more brood in the colony. I will send pics of that when I can.
