Indeed, I have had this happen to me, luckily they were just detritus mites and remained in the outworld.
When starting a new culture I carefully inspect each worm before adding it to the new bin, to avoid any mites, and dispose of the old bedding.
One of my bins has mites right now, but I have to wait until I have more time to manually inspect and move a thousand mealworms, pupae, and beetles though.
For now, they are in a remote corner of my house and I freeze all the mealworms before feeding.

Will freezing them for 24h kill the mites/pests?

No, definetly not. Ok, some more tropic mites maybe, but they are a real tough species.
