Help with Carpenter Ants

I found a small red and black Carpenter Ant colony while I was splitting cherry today, any advice on getting them out of the wood and keeping them?

Are they in a rotting log? If they are you can just break open the stump and use and aspirator to get them out. If they are in a living tree, forget it. Remember to gather all of the ants if possible.
