So... I’m officially making bad decisions. Found a Crematogaster queen this morning, and in my infinite wisdom I’ve decided to keep it. Probably going to sell her colony eventually, if she makes one.

Problem is right now that I don’t have test tubes, so I’m hoping you creative folks can give me an idea or two on what to put her into. Any thoughts?

I do have insect collection vials, but I am anxious about using those because of the relatively minute size

I’ve successfully raised camponotus in water bottles with wet cottonballs, as well as in vials with wet cottonballs. However, this setup should only be used temporarily until you get more test tubes.

Yeah, I ended up jerry-rigging something that was basically two vials nested within each other and a bit of glue to hold stuff still. Seemed like it would work.

You can read my journal to learn from all my bad decisions. I think I’ve taken a colony of these ants farther than anybody else.

How far is that?

I raised a single queen to a mature colony that staged a nuptial flight on my patio this summer. They produced about 30-40 queen alates.
