I'm getting a Camponotus Quercicola planing to keep them in test tube and small outworld for now . But I was planing to make a horizontal formicarium out of oak. To move colony when time comes . Any recommendations. Is this a good idea ?

I wouldn’t do a wood formicarium. They have horrible humidity and camponotus might be able to chew out of it.

Camponotus don't need any humidity inside their nest - in the wild they live in dry wood logs. maybe it'd work, but when they begin to outgrow their nest make sure to get a new one or else they might chew their way out, like manitobant says.

Wood Nests:

Pros:

Looks nice ig

You could say it puts Camponotus in their "prefered habitat"

Cons:

Humidity is a nightmare to control

Moist wood is easy to chew

It takes a long time to soak in water

Ants can chew it dry, too

In my experience it's absolute madness to carve into

Wood very easily molds over, like, very very easily unless you have springtails and isopods vibing there, too

Thanks y’all for the replies. Gonna make AAC horizontal formicarium. Gonna give them some oak chips . Same as my other Camponotus they took it inside the test tube .
