Hi!

 

I noticed that Messor (harvester ants) ants and possibly Lasius niger ants leave these kind of thick trails on sides of glass test tubes with time.

Are these some 'chosen' pheromone trails that show what places the ants visit the most? Can scent trails build up this way? And is it normal?

I think it's poop. 

Mesor ants are just messy.

The ants have access to cotton and cotton disks, but I can't really see the fibers in these stripes, unless they swallow that cotton for some reason. Now that I think of it, it may be just feces.

Yeah, some species crap all over the place like that. I see it a lot from Veromessor and Pogonomyrmex.

ah yes my Pogonomyrmex cali queen did that - there were white streaks everywhere. I wonder why they don't keep their restroom places more tidy. Doing that just promotes bacteria growth.

My Pogonomyrmex and Veromessor andrei always left that behind. It is from like the seeds and poop. Completely normal for harvester ant species and is easy to clean

I have always wondered the same thing. I have seen it with lot's of sp I have kept. Now I know!

I can confirm that that's poop and completely normal.
My messor leave that as well. Makes it easy to spot where the garbage is too.
I had lasius before and it was the same thing they like to poop on glass it seems. lol
