I found this C. laevigatus hiking up Big Bear on July 4th. They flew a few months back, and I think this one could not find a founding chamber and was still looking for one. She was crawling on a cut tree stump. Her gastor is smaller than usual and she appeared sluggish and weak. I fed her some sugar water and she is more awake now.

I just boosted her with some eggs from a nearby colony and she happily accepted them. So right now, none of the brood are her own and they are all adopted.

Let's hope she makes it!

Diffeomorphismus put some paper in the test tube so they don't slide around.  I thought this was a brilliant idea.

I mean for the queen. I'm assuming you didn't go hiking with prepped test tubes (wouldn't be surprised if you did though  :P ).

That's interesting, although with some like Pogonomyrmex I'm almost sure they'll try to eat the paper. My Formica francoeuri also took the piece of Al foil I had some Blue on and decided to make it part of their nest.

Haha ic. I actually have tons of plastic test tubes in my truck.

On this hike, I knew I would find stuff, so I brought along a dozen or so test tubes. They weren't prepped but I brought along a bag of cotton balls as well. I should have called it a Hiking/Anting excursion  :D

For sure. I hope she makes it. I like this species.

LACRIMOSA for LAEVIGATUS

Ah well. I knew she wouldn't last. Was hoping she had a chance.

I came home today and noticed her in a strange position. Slightly tapped the test tube and she was in the rigor mortis ant pose. Um, all ants goto heaven?

Do I hold the record for the shortest journal?

Current record yes I do think so. :P Maybe. My Pogonomyrmex subnitidus didn't last long nor did dspdrew's original Pheidole vistana journal.

Can you make more journals, pleeeaaasee? Your Camponotus are some of the most successful out there, I wanna know how you do it! If it’s too much work, don’t bother, you got your own life to live, but if you can it would be awesome!

Haha. Forgot all about this. Well, not this one! This was the first C. laevigatus I ever found. Was so sad. Worst journal ever.

ROFL But in all honesty any tips for Camponotus would be much appreciated, if not a journal. I’m determined to get a 35 worker colony of Camponotus from one queen this year.

Shouldn't be too hard. You're up north, right? Should be easy with C. modoc.
