Olive oil as a barrier being attacked

Bit of a weird one so I thought I would ask if any one has seen this, I placed olive oil around the top of the out world and the workers and Queen started to atack the areas with olive oil. Also, to top it of I does not stop them and they just climb over it still!!!

Ye it's on my priority list, I was just using it as a temporary fix. Do some species often react this way?

They get stuck in it.

Why does it kill them?

 

If over applied, it will become somewhat sticky and unlucky ants will become trapped in it.

In my experience, some colonies will even try eating it.

Tetramorium definitely eat olive oil barriers.... I have used mineral oil instead. Because Fluon tends to wear out for me too often :/
