I mean it's just a matter of time till one of those girls bites me. Or stings me. Or both. 

 

It has not happened yet, and I'm very careful. But today the tube came undone when I was moving them and about 5 of the girls got out. Got them back in. 

 

So... tell me how is it?

I have been by a Pogonomyrmex cali worker that escaped. It bit and stung me on the side of my leg. It felt like a got needle sort of. Not as bad as I expected though tbh.

Their sting... It's bad. Like, really bad. Definitely stronger then Solenopsis in my opinion. To make matters worse, it lasts quite a while as well. Afterwards, it itches. Always wondered why they were so common in those Uncle Milton ant farm kits. 

 

When they bite, you don't really feel a thing. They just grasp on with their mandibles and swing around. It's quite funny.

I'd like to add that it differs on the species. P. maricopa stings hurt like hell, whereas P. rugosus stings are more mild, but last longer and itch more.

when I was little I had a gel ant farm and I also got huge pogonomerex workers with it. one escaped so I picked it up with my fingers and a drop of liquid came out of its behind and I thought it peed. now I know she missed stinging me

its honestly the second worst sting from ants I've encountered number 1 belongs to a Manica sp(i wanted to see how bad the sting was so i got one to sting me it hurt alot and OH HOW IT ITCHED) but nothing is worse than a Pogonomyrmex sting in the armpit(long story)

I trying to get brood for my Pogonomyrmex queen last year I spent about 4 hours excavating a mature colony for their brood but the closest I got was a callow worker that got killed immediately.(that's the simplest version of it)

Digging up a Pogonomyrmex colony just sounds like a generally bad time all around.

I literally have wondered this multiple times, but I am always careful when dealing with my colony of pogonomyrmex. I'd rather not intentionally find out. As I've had some nasty bee, hornet, and yellow jacket stings in my lifetime.

I've gotten stung by a P. californicus worker because someone picked it up and put it in my [censored] lol. It hurts and lasts for a little while... for some reason the stinger was still where i got stung though.
