Forelius, probably pruinosus or mccooki. F. pruinosus seems to have nuptial flights primarily in June & July, so maybe that suggests that you have mccooki, which might have a later flight season, but I don't have any experience with that species. If she gets workers and they have tiny hairs on the antennal scapes it's mccooki.
Go to the full postForelius or Dorymyrmex.
TestSubjectOne's Experiences in Antkeeping General Journal
Currently Keeping:
- Veromessor pergandei (1 queen, 600 workers)
- Novomessor cockerelli (1 queen, 200 workers)
- Myrmecocystus mexicanus (1 queen, 100 workers)
- Brachymyrmex patagonicus (3 queens?, 2,000 workers? & alates)
- Crematogaster sp. (1 queen, 600 workers)
- Liometopum occidentale (1 queen, 800 workers)
- Camponotus absqualator (1 queen, 130 workers)
I second thisForelius or Dorymyrmex.
We'll need length to better determine Genus with these images.
Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I had already stored her away before getting the measurements. I will make sure to get this info probably Sunday. I do agree she is one of the 2 Forelius, just hard to tell which one. Are either of these good to raise or not so much?
Shouldn't be too difficult, possibly picky with food. They're extremely thermophilic so they probably thrive the best if kept in a sand setup with a heat lamp.. Pogonomyrmex-like conditions.
After looking more at this queen, I believe I have another of the same species already which has been raising her first batch extremely slowly. I may look to join them and put into my sandy bifurcated mini hearth with some heat.
Any recommendations on merging these two queens? Should I wait for both to have workers before introducing? Or should I stay away from merging at this point?
Just keep them separatelyAny recommendations on merging these two queens? Should I wait for both to have workers before introducing? Or should I stay away from merging at this point?
since one of them already has workers, it is too late to merge and they will fight.Any recommendations on merging these two queens? Should I wait for both to have workers before introducing? Or should I stay away from merging at this point?
Thanks all. Looks like we now have 2 Forelius Mccooki colonies. One started and one wait and see.

Hey, you from Mississippi? Haven’t seen tons of activity from around here
I am. Yeah I don't know of much if any activity around here. Most people I even mention this hobby to end up just having their heads explode in confusion.
Nice. I’m down at MSU right now so I was kind of excited when I saw your post.I am. Yeah I don't know of much if any activity around here. Most people I even mention this hobby to end up just having their heads explode in confusion.

Yeah I'm up here anting. I actually use a lot of MSU data about which parks have the species I'm looking to find. I have already checked with the rangers and got the green light for collecting anything locally.

Nice, where did you get permission to collect? One of the state parks?
