Hey guys. Long time insect keeper but new to ants. In my travels I’ve actually been overlooking these guys. They’re tiny and blend in very well. I can’t get a positive id so any help would be appreciated. I lost my cam microscope so this is best I can do with awful digi zoom. Thanks!

I wanna say these are myrmecocystus mexicanus or myrmecocystus navajo. There common name is the honey pot ant.

Definitely not a Myrmecocystus sp, Cottonwood is far out of their range and they appear very small. Possibly Brachymyrmex, but it will be hard to tell exactly without closer photos.

I’ll try to get better ones. Yea we’re In Northern California. I guess that would be a better location title haha. I’ll get a measurement too but they’re tiny tiny. Hence the terrible zoom. Let me see if I can find something to get better pics.

Young ant keeper with a decent amount of knowledge on local ant species.

Currently kept ant species, favorites have a star in front of their names (NOT in alphabetical order, also may be outdated sometimes): ★ Camponotus irritans inferior, ★ Ooceraea biroi, Pheidole parva, ★ Nylanderia sp., ★ Paraparatrechina tapinomoides, Platythyrea sp., Anochetus sp., Colobopsis sp. (cylindrica group), ★ Crematogaster ferrarii, Polyrhachis (Myrma) cf. pruinosa, Polyrhachis (Cyrtomyrma) laevissima, Tapinoma sp. (formerly Zatapinoma)

Death count: Probably over a hundred individual queens and colonies by now. I cannot recall whatsoever.
