Video of the queen laying an egg

Pseudomyrmex apache! I'm very excited about this one. To start this off, I recieved this queen two months ago in a trade with M_Antz because it was assumed she was a dud or infertile. Lo and behold two months later (Sept. 23rd, 2021) I saw an egg. Then today when I checked on her she was in the middle of laying an egg! Unfortunately my video of the entire process of her laying an egg did not save  :ugone2far: . She is currently in a 16mm tube as per advice from someone who has reared lots of Pseudomyrmex. She likes the dry side of the tube which is annoying when I feed her, but it is what it is.

Thank you, hopefully it will go more smooth than other attempts people have made.  ;)

So, the video saved and appeared randomly in my camera roll this morning. Heres a link to it.

Yesterday i gave her a superworm head which she absolutely devoured, she also drank a bit of sugar water. Today I woke up to a new egg, hopefully she continues to lay. *fingers crossed*

All hail the noodles! Do you plan to put them in a wooden nest, or keep them in test tubes?

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I am thinking of putting them in a tub with a few glass tubes until they are larger. After that, I plan on machining faux beetle galleries into a piece of wood. I think it will mimic what bigger colonies of P. apache like to nest in quite well.

What an odd looking ant! I recently got into the ant keeping hobby and I'm learning there's so many different and bizzare ant species out there. Is the queen semi-claustral?

Most, if not all, species of this genus are semi-claustral.

She has now laid ten eggs! I've check them under my stereo scope and they do seem to be developing, so I have high hopes. She has been eating protein almost everyday along side sugar water. I think I will wait until something significant happens such as larvae to post another update, unless you people want more.

Nothing super significant has happened, just something that seems abnormal. This queen has now laid 15 eggs, most of which seem to be developing (the ones that don't show development are freshly laid).

Since it may have been hard to see it last time here is a new picture of the larva. Currently this queen has two larvae and many soon to be larvae. She has stopped laying eggs for a while now; with a total of 16 eggs being laid.

Update 23.x.2021

So, this queen has been doing quite well. Only 12 out of her 16 eggs became larvae and didn't get eaten. I've been feeding her protein daily and also sugars which she has devoured everytime. The larvae has been developing quite well, one of which has reached just over five millimeters. Something I did notice is that she moved all of her larvae to the water side of the tube. I do plan on doing a tub and tubes setup for this colony until they are large enough to move into an arboreal vivarium I have planned.

Here's some pictures from this morning of her and her larvae.

Update 5.xi.2021

So, the past while has been pretty redundant with just feeding. What has changed though is there is now a pupa and a pupating larva. The queen has also started to lay her second batch of eggs.

med_gallery_5829_2138_1421097.jpg

The majority of the eggs are at the gaster of the pupa, one is above the pupa's head. I'm pretty excited to finally get workers.
