I've always wanted to Have A big multi species setup with Crematogaster and Temnothorax, or a Pogonomyrmex colony and Solonopsis Molesta colony. The one I would choose would probably be the Molesta and Pogonomyrmex one. What are your dream multi-species setups?

Ants are cute, that's that.

I would want Pogonomyrmex for sure with Dorymyrmex, or a smaller species like pheidole

I don't know much about multi-species setups, but it would be cool to have Iridomyrmex and Myrmecia.

That probably wouldn't work though, so maybe Iridomyrmex purpureus and Camponotus consobrinus?

My Ants:

Colonies: Camponotus humilior 1w, Opisthopsis rufithorax 11w, Aphaenogaster longiceps ~5w, Pheidole sp. ~235w ~15m, Iridomyrmex sp. 2q 1w, Brachyponera lutea 6w, Crematogaster sp. ~20w, Podomyrma sp. 1w

Queens: Polyrhachis cf. robinsoni, Polyrhachis (Campomyrma) sp. (likely infertile)

Previously Kept: Colobopsis gasseri, Technomyrmex sp., Rhytidoponera victorae, Nylanderia cf. rosae, Myrmecia brevinoda/forficata, Polyrhachis australis, Solenopsis/Monomorium

Key: Q = Queen, W = Worker, M = Major

From what I know about Iridomyrmex, they seem a little aggressive for a multi species setup.

For me I would probably do Temnothorax and Myrmica or Aphaenogaster.

I would love to pair Temnothorax or Brachymyrmex with a large species in a multi-ant setup. However, the space needed to let two colonies coexist is much higher than a conventional outworld. Non-dominant species survive by hiding on the outskirts of more aggressive colonies and generally cede food and move away if the environment is too competitive. The non-dominant colony will be unable to forage in constant contact with aggressive ants and would likely die - not to mention that they would be killed if their nest is ever broken into.

I would make a setup with Myrmicaria brunnea with Hypoponera or Strumigenys.

Myrmecia are known to block nearby nests of other ants with their rubbish before they come out to forage. I don't think Iridomyrmex are the best species for multi-species setups as the are very aggressive and will raid nearby nests of other colonies. Not to mention their colonies can get HUGE.

Yeah actually, I'd done barely any research on multi-species setups and sorta just thought of a nocturnal and diurnal species : P

It took me a few seconds to realise the first one would never, ever work.

Pheidole rhea and Camponotus castaneus

Either that or Dinoponera gigantea and Solenopsis molesta, just for the size difference
