Hi from New Mexico! While we don't have much going for us, we do have some awesome ants. I had gotten out of ant keeping temporarily to focus on other things. Decided to leap back in this year and what a year for it! 15 M. mimicus queens, 16 M. mexicanus, Pogonomyrmex, novomessor, forelius, and 3 sp. I haven't ID'd yet..... 60 queens in total and I'm pretty excited!

Idk sounds like another weeb ant keeper to me. To bad we don’t have titan ants.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I don’t get why so many antkeepers are weebs/like anime. Are we purposely trying to be as virgin as possible?


No offense to the weebs here, just curious why its so popular in this hobby.

Honestly, I couldn't say. I'm not a weeb, but it's more fun than some other generic art off the internet, I don't want to use my personal pics, and I have no current ability due to lack of proper equipment to take pics of my own ants to use. So it's a character off a show and frankly, if you don't like it, you're welcome to provide me with an interesting fun pic to use, keep your judgy opinions to yourself, or feel free to bite the derrière of a bovine in the midst diarrheic attack.

Well, a very large portion of antkeepers are highschoolers, so being virgin isn't exactly hard or rare. However, as a representative of the antkeeping weeb community, we apologize for not getting as many women in bed as you do, surely you have dozens lining up after you show them how you call people virgins on a ant forum, you're so cool.

I am happily married with 3 kids and am many, many years outside of almost all of those stereotypes to boot. As far as I know using anime pics off the internet is incredibly popular whether or not a person knows anything about the character represented. Anonymity would be my guess behind the theoretical popularity of "weebs" and I would say it's mostly a mischaracterization. I happen to enjoy dubbed anime, but I enjoy a lot of other stereotypical shows as well. Like all the crime documentaries that women are so famous for being obsessed with... for a reason.... like judgy internet trolls....

Anime is popular everywhere now. It also tends to be a lot more popular with teenagers, which is around the age of many antkeepers too so yeah.

Lol MrPurpleB, just stand them near a Pogonomyrmex nuptial flight. Plenty of those girls to take down any brute. Those stings are brutal.

Luca, depends on how many make it to their first workers. All have eggs right now but it remains to be seen who will make it past founding. Also depends on species. I have 2 and am waiting to see how they all do.

I'm willing to just take a founding queen, I just want the novelty of having pots. Honestly, I don't care about the species, pots are pots. Also, if you want too, I'd be willing to trade an Odontomachus clarus queen with you for any pot queen if I find any more, thanks though!

Ants I have:

1 Formica fusca group- 0 workers

1 Tetramorium immigrans colony-20 workers

1 Dorymyrmex insanus- 1 queen, used to have workers

 

1 large P. occidentalis colony- around 50 workers, plenty of brood
