Hey, I just wanted to see what everyone is keeping and their favorite species!

I'm keeping...

Pogonomyrmex californicus concolor

Camponotus vicinus (low elevation)

Tetramorium immigrans

My favorite species is probably the Pogonomyrmex californicus.

Pogonomyrmex occidentalis colony of about 250? There are so many and they are all crazy and never stop doing things. I need the ant equivalent of a busy box for them.

Camponotus discolor colony of about 130? I don't know how many. They fill up two small "foranto" wooden nests. They are shy, but excited to hunt.

Camponotus pennsylvanicus TWO colonies of about 25. One in a wooden nest I made, the other in an "undergroundciti" nest from etsy. They are doing really well, and I hope I can overwinter them properly.

Lasius neoniger colony of SO MANY at least 200, the queen is ALWAYS laying eggs.

Lasius sp. (probably emergantis) I found her on the sidewalk of NYC. She has some larva and is in the drawer.

Camponotus sp. (looks like pennsylvanicus but smaller and a little red) she has two pupae

Nylandria sp. (about 8 ants, but growing fast)

Formica subsericia (they stopped growing TWO months ago... I'm worried something is wrong) about 20 ants. But they seem lively and are scared of everything and skittish.

Starting this July I'm posting videos of my ants every week on youTube.

I like to make relaxing videos that capture the joy of watching ants.

If that sounds like your kind of thing... follow me >here<

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

It's quite simple... I don't! I live in a 9x9 foot room and barely have enough space to cram a fouton in the corner to sleep on. The rest is all ants! (and a desk, which is half Atta setup half computer space.) But hey, who needs a bed when you have cool ants.

Keeping:

T. immigrans — 12 ladies, I think another dozen about to eclose, currently in an AC test tube+portal connected to an undergroundciti starter nest for feeding/eventual expansion, definitely my favorite

P. imparis — 22 ladies, would be my favorite because they're so cute and chubby, but unfortunately boring as snot so far. Bought them this summer as an 8-girl colony with the rest eclosing since, currently in a tarheel bifurcated mini

A. picea — Little lady ran up to me at the cat dish in my second floor apartment about a month ago. Founding brood ball seems to have a couple larva in it about a month after capture, it's hard to tell how many nanitics to expect (from an initial egg batch of 9-10) or when to expect them. I know these ladies can have slow nanitics development, though I've currently got her heated at 77-86F (bad about watching my cheap heating pad). Currently in an AC tube, planning to connect to another portal with a (custom sized) grout insert tube from Por Amor for them to hopefully move into shortly afterward. Because their workers are individually so much bigger than the other two and likely to be more active, I have high hopes that they'll be my new favorites next summer (though the tetras will be crazy in total numbers by then I'm sure haha). I'm hoping by next summer they'll be ready to expand beyond tubes and I can move them into a medium sized undergroundciti nest that I'm excited to use.

I had multiple pennsylvanicus queens earlier who all died or were infertile unfortunately, and while I'd loooove an L. neoniger queen and looked a few times, doesn't seem likely I'll be able to do any additional anting this year and the season's already coming to a close here so probably not :(
