My city recently proposed an allowed list for pets, and for invertebrates it says this “ Feeder crickets, mealworms, other worms, flies Insecta various sp.”. Would that mean that I wouldn’t be able to keep ants or praying mantids? The whole list is just bad, banning all sorts of different things that can’t do any harm. I’m just hoping that ants will still be allowed…..

Here’s a screenshot of it, I saw that it says “Insecta various sp” so I think maybe that would include ants, I’m not 100% sure though.

Damn, that’s too much. I doubt anyone would enforce it, though.

I doubt the city would go after you for keeping a few colonies of ants.

I'm just not sure I wanna risk it with the fine for having a prohibited animal, (or animals) 6205A76D-8816-460D-9779-27D90D59B505.png

Yeah, especially in my province and city the people making these decisions have no idea what they are talking about….. it frustrates me so much.

Welp, looks like I'm gonna break the law. Might as well import some exotics since everything is illegal anyways.

Well in a country where you can get arrested for calling someone by the wrong pronoun, this really doesn't surprise me. I hope that the term "various Insecta sp." could allow you to keep ants.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

It looks like it lists the species that are not allowed and the list doesn't include ants, so I assume you will be fine for keeping them

Ants are so well known that you'd think they'd list them separately from "Insecta various sp."

This part lists allowable animals.

Here's the link to the document:

Insects are specifically allowed, and I did a quick Ctrl+F of the document for "ant" and no hits. Obligatory not a lawyer, but looks like you're in the clear.

I, on the other hand, live in a city where ants (all species) are specifically categorized as "dangerous or potentially dangerous" animals and are prohibited as pets, which is asinine, since I suppose they are dangerous only if in test tube, but in the wild they are no problem. In any case, if they take my ants, I'd be willing to go to court and fight it since the city ordinance dealing with it specifies a law that doesn't seem to give the city the authority to decide whether an animal is dangerous or not.

You can immediately tell the idiocy of whoever is writing this, as they don't allow fish that exceed 14 inches, yet they explicitly allow goldfish and koi which are some of the very few large fish species commonly kept in the hobby that invasively occupy temperate North America.

In much of the United States, you are legally required to register your mammalian pets (cats, dogs, etc.) with your city/county/whatever. The vast majority of people do not follow this and it is practically not enforced at all. I would guess that enforcement on this ruleset would be similarly nonexistent. It's just not practical and law enforcement usually has much more important things to worry about than making sure your pets are the correct species

People always make the assumption that goldfish stay within a few inches long because they're never given the proper care in captivity. Koi on the other hand, I would at least hope most people know they can reach 36 inches? I'm just not sure about that one, lol.

I ffeel like, just with dogs and cats, this only becomes a problem iff someone reports you and the authorities show up to investigate.  Otherwise it wiill never, ever come up, just like someone above responded about dogs and cats.   I mean... If people can keep getting freaking tigers as pets and not getting busted... Your ants should be fine.   Just don't let them eat a neighbor!~
