i do not really care if they kill each other because i can find a crap tone again and also some neo lay before hiber
i have a neo that has 2 eggs currently.
This experiment has already been done and it didn't work.
So, maybe we could think of some changes that might make it work this time.
Otherwise it isn't much of an experiment.
Starting this July I'm posting videos of my ants every week on youTube.
I like to make relaxing videos that capture the joy of watching ants.
If that sounds like your kind of thing... follow me >here<.
Just letting you know that lasius neoniger found through pleometrosis, and aren't truly polygynous. This means that once the first workers arrive, the queens will start killing each other until only one remains.
Also, lasius neoniger usually will not lay eggs until after hibernation, so expect to be waiting a while for workers
Every Lasius queen I have ever kept has laid eggs and gotten workers before hibernation.
"God made..... all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds (including ants). And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:25 NIV version
Keeping:
Formica cf. pallidefulva, cf. incerta, cf. argentea
Formica cf. aserva, cf. subintegra
Myrmica sp.
Lasius neoniger, brevicornis

I agree, however South Dakota has longer, colder winters than most states, so that surprises me. However it makes sense, as its probably a survival method. They can't start as early in the spring due to the cold, so they start before it gets cold in the first place.

In the Sierras it appears to vary by species. The Acanthomyops sp., which is likely an undescribed one, does not appear to lay eggs before hibernation. Neither do the niger group Lasius. The L. aphidicola, and the L. sitiens or brevicornis however, do lay eggs before hibernation, despite flying at the same time. I too believe it is a regional difference - the behavior of a species will not be the same in all it's range, especially if it stretches across an entire continent, as some Lasius do.
Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

well anyways i want ppl to under stand idc if the queens die cuz they are crap queens
They are living being though, whatever there not my queens.
My favorite queens/colony’s:
Pheidole Tysoni, Selonopis Molesta, Brachymyrmex Depilis, Tetramorium Immagrians, Prenolepis Imparis, Pheidole Bicirinata
well anyways i want ppl to under stand idc if the queens die cuz they are crap queens
So what exactly is this experiment attempting to show? What is your hypothesis? Do you have a control?

Lasius neonigers are awesome to raise, and I am sure there are many other ant keepers that would be glad to take care of them. Not just letting them kill each other off in some "experiment".
Currently kept species
L. neoniger, P. occidentalis, C. modoc, C. novaeboracensis, C. vicinus, T. immigrans, A. occidentalis, S. molesta, P. imparis, M. kennedyi, M semirufus, F. pacifica, P. californica, M. ergatogyna.
Previously kept species
T. rugatulus, B. depilis.
Looking for
Myrmecocystus pyramicus, Myrmecocystus testaceus
Pheidole creightoni, Pheidole inquilina, Crematogaster coarctata, Crematogaster mutans

"This experiment has already been done"
We're talking about neoniger, not niger like you linked. Also, he is doing it with five times as many queens.
Bruh guys. He’s just trying something out. If he ends up with one queen so what, he’s still most likely gonna end up with a pretty impressive first batch of workers.
I would pay lots of money for any one of these queens and if they die it won't be because they are crap queens its because they are a crap keeper.
1X Pogonomyrmex occidentalis 40-50 Workers
1X Solenopsis molesta 10 Workers (mono)
Ants I Want: Crematogaster sp, Camponotus Sp., Ponera Pennsylvanica, Mymercocystus sp.
