To my understanding, their colonies get quite a bit larger and they're more "spunky."

Aphaenogaster cf. rudis

Tetramorium immigrans

Tapinoma sessile

Formica subsericea

Pheidole sp.

Camponotus nearcticus

Yeah, with a single queen, they get to a thousand workers in like 2-3 years... Whereas my 3 QUEEN Lasius americanus colony has like 300 after 2 years after capture...

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I really want a neoniger queen this year, especially since it takes them a year to get going.

Are there any particular environmental cues to look for here in the northeast US? Or should I just be out at sunset anytime it's not windy or rainy basically?

There were hundreds solenopsis molesta drones at my blacklight, but hardly any queen queens. I caught 4 Lasius neoniger queens but only kept the one without wings

Alright well the universe wants me to have a neoniger queen tonight. I was out looking on the way back from errands and not seeing anything, and had decided to give up and stay in for the night because I hadn't even been able to find any nests preparing for flights.

I'm in the house feeling sweaty and gross and then I think "man that droplet in my eyebrow right now is really ... mobile?" And I pluck a soaking wet male alate out off my temple

So I guess I'll go back out and try a farmer's market lawn area down the road in a bit, and if I DON'T come back with a queen   what a tease, universe. What a tease.

*edit* Universe hates me. Eat pizza.

I definitely had that thought. But for their sake I sure hope they didn't, because we've got a hurricane around today

I can’t find any females only males EVERYWHERE at my blacklight there is probably 1 thousand nearing 2 thousandy I have no idea where the female alates are.

I'm just a city girl, but in a book I read it said that males often fly before females by a few hours or as much as a day, they spread the pheremones that trigger the flight in other colonies.
