Hey everyone!
I'm new here, and to the ant world in general. I'm trying to identify the species of the ants i found on my backyard. I used the ant wiki guide and got Zatania, but comparing my photos with the ones on antweb i think its camponotus Foreli.
What do you guys think? Where did I go wrong?

color: black with traces of brown

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

camponotus are usually very big compared to other ants, but nice try iding them!
Ants I am keeping:
none for now, planning on being more active this year

Although quite possible, without a few photos underneath a microscope and a fair bit of scrutiny, it is impossible to give an ID for Lasius any more precise than the group.

I ended up searching a bit more. Like everyone said is a lasius but the species I think it's fuliginosus
Definitely not Lasius fuliginosus or any of the other parasitic species.

I would say its definitely Lasius Niger but it may be Lasius lasioides (it looks more like niger to me but I can't be too sure).
I looked all other lasius species that are native in your area in antwiki and they look way different.

Yes, most assuredly in the niger group. fuliginosus has a very wide, somewhat heart-shaped head, and is jet black and shiny. Unlike this specimen.

L. fuliginosus would be a deeper, glossier black color and would have a larger head with a distinct concavity towards the top.
