Even if it is a Mackay paper, I find this particular synonymy rather convincing just based on the fact that the type series of truncorum was collected in North Carolina and that the type queen happens to look just like the southeastern species we call carolinensis. I agree that you guys could easily have an undescribed species, or many of them for that matter.
