What if you check tomorrow and all the larva will be gone? Will you cry?

What if you check in 2 week and all of the placodops are dead? Will you cry?

Some pretty large larvae here. Maybe they'll pupate by Sunday. I didn't want to disturb the queen too much today so I didn't take pictures. (someone came in and moved stuff around in my room, which might've shaken up her tube)

I actually started writing this an hour ago, and I just checked again and there's a pupa. I took a video but I don't have time to upload it so I'll do that tomorrow.

Did a brood count today. Looks like she has 28 eggs, 19 larvae, and 1 pupa (unmarked picture on imgur link). Some of the eggs look like they might be hatching as well. I was reading coc's journal of his M. mexicanus, and his queens seemed to lay mostly in batches, whereas this queen lays basically every day.

Today is day 22 since capture, and I'm estimating that she'll have workers by day 41 or 42, which is when I'll actually be out of town.  :( I'm a little worried about how much energy she'll have if she does actually end up raising 20 workers for the first batch, so I'm planning on feeding her some sugar next week after most of these larvae have grown and pupated.

You can see how the queen is doing a pretty good job of separating the large larvae from the smaller larvae/eggs, so hopefully this will reduce cannibalization a bit.

Queen pics. There are only so many ways you can take pictures of a single ant and I'm on negative 5 ways left. But I'll probably keep going anyways haha.

I can see why you might think that, considering how powerful my queen is, she might be too dangerous.

Not much update today. The queen has 4 pupae, but I don't want to disturb her, so here's a different red and black ant.

She has 6 pupae now. The pupae are starting to block out my view of the larvae and eggs, and she's keeping them super close to herself  :*(

9 pupae now. I can still count around 11-ish larvae. I wonder how many of these will get to actually pupate.

How many workers now?

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

No workers yet, but she'll probably have some in a few days. I haven't been updating too much because there's not very much of a difference. 16 pupae as of this morning.

I didn't realize how long it's been since I updated. I've been away on an anting trip, and taking pictures of the queen has also been getting harder and harder as more and more sand covers the tube. She should have workers in the coming days, but unfortunately, I won't get to see them if they don't eclose before Sunday morning. I'll probably feed the queen on Saturday night so at least she won't tire herself out after workers start eclosing. Like I mentioned in the previous post, the queen has 16 pupae now. She also has a batch of about 30-ish eggs which will hopefully hatch once the workers eclose.
