Myrmecocystus placodops journal

I recently got 1 M. placodops queen. She was caught after a flight on June 25th in SoCal. I've heard their survival rate is pretty good so hopefully she does well.

Based off of some worker specimen from the location they were caught, these queens are likely M. placodops_02, which are closely related to the M. placodops_01 caught in southern Texas that have orbiculate heads. While I haven't managed to find any descriptions or pictures of placodops_02, I'm fairly certain these are the 02 variant because 03 is much smaller than 02 and about the size of M. koso. They also likely aren't one of the 5 variants of M. mendax based on identification I got from the key. Here are some microscope pictures:

I have pictures and videos starting from June 30. Here they are:

The entire M. placodops and M. mendax subspecies thing is very annoying and complicates everything so much. Glad I was able to spread the document about the variants a bit though, maybe we can get a lot of it straightened out...

Her eggs have developed a bit, and a few of them are more yellow now, compared to the previous pictures when they nearly blended in with the white sand. I'm hoping she gets larvae by the weekend. Here are some pictures of her face and the eggs.

Not much of a big update today, but I noticed these eggs look pretty close to hatching. Maybe a few more days for larvae?

I believe he was joking.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Nice formica

Best formica. Maybe I'll post some in here one day when I can think of absolutely nothing to update with.

Some of the eggs look like they have a little more shape. Fingers crossed for Friday or this weekend.

Also, if anyone is wondering, I take these pictures with a phone and a macro lens. The key seems to be to shine an ungodly amount of light on the test tube, so I wouldn't recommend doing this if your ants are quick to stress out.
