Hello,

I keep finding black ants around my house. I killed 6 today on my first floor and then went upstairs to my sons room and moved a toy and a handful of ants scattered fast. Not sure if the pictures are very good or not. I can try to find some more of these ants and try again. I live in NH.

I’m concerned that these are carpenter ants.

My house is a cape so I have little doors that open to the overhang area of the house. I climbed out into these spaces and saw no water coming in anywhere no signs of ants out there no signs of wet wood etc. I did have carpenter ants last year that did damage to my detached garage (garage sits 100+ ft from house) due to whoever built the garage not weather proofing. I sprayed and tore all the wood out and redid everything. I just can’t remember what these ants looked like besides the fact that they were big black ants.

I tried the whole “My gallery” thing and uploaded the same images I attached here but it’s not working.

many people come to our forum for advice on ants, including when they need to exterminate them. This camponotus colony is infesting this person’s house and probably nesting in their walls, and you must remember that most people don’t care about antkeeping/selling ants and the fact that our beloved camponotus can sadly be pests at times.

It is impossible to tell if they were nesting in the structure or just foraging inside. They are most likely to nest in wood which is already damaged in some. Sugary baits will generally do the trick to eliminate them however it is not an overnight fix..

Seal entry points and check for any rotten, damp wood in the house. Terro ant gel will probably eliminate them if you can’t physically block their entry. In any case, don’t freak out. They won’t eat your house down.

"The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer." Prov. 30:25
Keep ordinary ants in extraordinary ways.
