Found on Blacklight (morning or night, could’ve been anytime in the night) ~ June 19th
I checked my blacklight trap a couple nights ago and found what I originally thought were P. tysoni. However, as I have been looking closer at the colony of P. tysoni that I currently have and these new queens, there are several differences.
~ The new queens are slightly bulkier
~ The coloration as a whole is darker on these new queens than the ones I found last year
~ The date of the nuptial flight of these new queens was much earlier than when I found P. tysoni last year
~ And finally, I noticed from all the P. tysoni that I caught last year: They don’t shed their wings. These new queens that I caught have started to shed their wings.
Here’s some bad photos of my current P. tysoni colony:
And here’s some bad photos of the new queens that I caught:
There is a noticeable difference (at least for me) in the appearance and behavior of the queens. Are their any other species of Pheidole that this could be? (I can get better photos if need be.)
