1. Location (on a map) of collection:   Newark, Delaware (New Castle County)

2. Date of collection: June 18, 2021
3. Habitat of collection:  backyard, in grass; no large trees or forests immediately close
4. Length (from head to gaster): 5 mm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture:  blackish, brownish, with paler/yellow legs
6. Distinguishing characteristics: almost looks like a wasp, Gaster is "rectangular" from side profile, not an oval
7. Distinguishing behavior: none
8. Nest description: don't know; was found in some old newspaper in an unlit fire pit; three individuals found at the same time, all with wings still attached

9. Nuptial flight time and date: don't know

Bummer it's a male...

I'm still learning.

So, generally speaking, it's the overall slender body form, and the smallish head coupled with the larger eyes that gives it away as a male?

 

I'll know for the future.  Thanks for the quick responses everyone!

(I released him along with his two compatriots--also males-- this morning; the flew away fine)
