Question about ant cocoons

Do all Ponerine ants need substrate to spin cocoons and is it the opposite for Formicinae ants? I know, it's a dumb question but I was curious.


Began antkeeping in 2018  :)

Any species that forms cocoons during the pupal stage needs substrate or a rough surface to use as scaffolding.
