Depends on the species. Fully claustral? Maybe a week or two. Semi claustral? A few days. In the end they will both start eating away the remaining brood.
Ants are Pets, not Pests.
-Camponotus sansabeanus
-Camponotus US-CA02
-Camponotus vicinus
-Formica podzolica
-Monomorium spp.
-Pogonomyrmex californicus
-Solenopsis spp.
Ok, um lets say Camponotus pennsylvanicus, Lasius niger, and Lasius neglectus.
Ok, yea, I fed them sugar water, but is the queen just going to feed the brood just sugar water? Or does she still have something left in her wing mucle area?
You should feed protein, typically insects, as soon as your first workers hatch. Depending on the species, the queen may have some stored protein left, but at this point she will be almost out and the colony will need more to grow.
TestSubjectOne's Experiences in Antkeeping General Journal
Currently Keeping:
- Veromessor pergandei (1 queen, 600 workers)
- Novomessor cockerelli (1 queen, 200 workers)
- Myrmecocystus mexicanus (1 queen, 100 workers)
- Brachymyrmex patagonicus (3 queens?, 2,000 workers? & alates)
- Crematogaster sp. (1 queen, 600 workers)
- Liometopum occidentale (1 queen, 800 workers)
- Camponotus absqualator (1 queen, 130 workers)
Ok, I'll feed them more sugar water and a superworm segment.
