My camponotus irritans colony was about three months old and 30 workers in size when I acquired a little formicarium for their housing. In two months, it grew to about 150 workers and many of them gathered in the outworld. I was caught out by their unexpectedly rapid growth.
So I'm trying to move them into an acrylic formicarium. It has been placed between the old formicarium and the outworld, so many ants will pass through it when they go hunting for food. They move very fast, by the way.
Can we expect the ants to hang out in the larger formicarium, and eventually move their brood there? It should take time, and it should be interesting to see some migration. I hope to use the small formicarium for another species one day.
