I found my first Veromessor queen, from North California. Does anyone have experience raising these? I've put her in a test tube with bluegrass and poppy seeds. Is substrate a must? I have successfully founded Pogonomyrmex subdentatus at mid-upper 80s but I'm not sure if Veromessor like it that hot.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure they have roughly the same care as Pogonomyrmex. Please don't assume that is correct as I am not experienced with species like this. I am also curious about care because I will be moving to California and Veromessor is a target of mine.

I use a THA nest, not sure if you want to consider that as substrate but my V. andrei do not walk on any glass or acrylic surface. Prior to that I had them on a hydrostone nest/outworld, again, dried with substrate on it similar to a THA. Though I added sand in the test tube, they ended up moving out the sand and replaced it with seeds.
