Found this gal with my nylanderia earlier today, I saw two of them but the other seemed infertile and still tried to fly, while this one only crawled around on the ground. She wasn’t actually in the pool but 5 feet from it walking on the ground, today was a good nuptial flight day lol. She’s 14-16 mm and caught me off-guard as generally the only camponotus around here that I’ve seen have all been C. pennsylvanicus, however the bright red on her underside clearly tells me she’s something else, might be C. Chromades or C. Americanus, not sure.
Found in Illinois 5-21-21

Thanks for the help!

I second herculeanus. Always loved the colors on that species. Wish I could have her hehe.

Currently: Considering moving to Australia
Reason: Myrmecia

In Central Illinois?? I doubt that. I think C. chromaiodes is more likely. There is only one record in Central Illinois, so they are clearly quite rare there.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).
