I always thought that the reason why alates have such a big thorax was to help them fly. Extra muscle or something like that.
Yes, that's mostly muscles. But claustral and some semi claustral queens, the ones who mostly have such big thoraces in the first place, use that muscle as food to raise their first brood and themselves. Normally such big muscles are not needed. Look at Hypoponera or Myrmica/Stenamma, for example.

Formica sp. Couldn't tell you which one, here in Florida they've been replaced with carpenter ants.
Ants are small creatures... but together... they can rule the world.
