I'm in mid Michigan, it's May 18, just breaking into the 80F range. The camponotus should be flying any day now, and I saw a few out and about so I started looking around. One landed on my head, fell to the ground, then flew away.

I ended up finding two other queens running around that shouldn't be out this time of year as far as I know. One is a formica fusca group that I'm familiar with, I caught a few last summer, but in July.

The other one is a mystery to me. It's about the same length as the fusca but skinnier. The most numerous queens I find in the yard are formica pallidefulva group but this looks very different.

These were spotted on a sidewalk in a suburban area by the way. Interestingly I did also nab a pallidefulva sp queen about this time last year running across the driveway.

Here's the fusca sp:

Here's the unknown:

Here they are side by side with a cm ruler:

Any ideas? Thanks!

Second is a Myrmentoma group Camponotus queen, likely C. nearcticus

Can you reattach the images here to your main post?  The other topic was hidden since this one had a response already.

Hmm not sure what's going on with the site. First try the page didn't load. Now when I went back to edit, my photos were there again.

You could have tried to do stuff during the forum's hourly backup.  Usually the site will lag during then.
