On May 1st while digging up a Pogonomyrmex huachucanus colony in Payson Arizona, I found a very surprising little crematogaster missourensis queen. We found tons of Crematogaster colonies in the area but had never seen a colony of this species,so finding a queen was quite unexpected.

After a few moments of freaking out that we had found an orthocrema Crematogaster, we put her in a tube with a piece of wet cotton to keep her hydrated.

After getting back home, I put her in a test tube setup and put her next to the heat mat. I assumed I had uncovered her in a founding chamber so I fed her some honey and fruit flies to fatten her up again and kickstart egg production.

Fast forward to today and she’s eaten a bunch of fruit flies and has laid a decent batch of eggs. One thing that worries me though is what appears to be fungus growing on her back. I’m not sure how it got there but fungus growing on an ant can’t be a good thing.

I’m hoping this ends up just going away but to be safe I introduced a callow worker from my lineolata colony in hopes that the worker will clean the queen end up cleaning the fungus too. If this doesn’t work I’ll probably have to resort to a quick vinegar bath which should get rid of the fungus. I’ve done this to introduce workers to other colonies but never to a queen so I’m hoping it won’t be necessary. I’ve got my finger crossed.

Checking up on them today (May 20th) and the queen has since accepted the worker and helped it eclose.

Young ant keeper with a decent amount of knowledge on local ant species.

YouTube: https://m.youtube.co...uKsahGliSH7EqOQ (It's pretty dead. Might upload again soon, don't expect my voice to sound the same though.)

Currently kept ant species, favorites have a star in front of their names (NOT in alphabetical order, also may be outdated sometimes): Camponotus irritans inferior, Ooceraea biroi, Pheidole parva, Nylanderia sp., Paraparatrechina tapinomoides, Platythyrea sp., Anochetus sp., Colobopsis sp. (cylindrica group), Crematogaster ferrarii, Polyrhachis (Myrma) cf. pruinosa, Polyrhachis (Cyrtomyrma) laevissima, Tapinoma sp. (formerly Zatapinoma)

Death count: Probably over a hundred individual queens and colonies by now. I cannot recall whatsoever.

Guys I have a question. What is an orthocrema crematogaster? Is it a subgenus?

Update 5/25

The callow worker I had given the queen to clean the fungus has since died. I’m assuming I accidentally damaged when I gave it to her. Fortunately, my lineolata colony still had quite a few pupae so I gave the queen one that had not yet eclosed. As of yesterday, the worker has eclosed successfully and to my surprise, cleaned off all the fungus that was growing on the queen.

I honestly wasn’t expecting this to work as workers usually don’t touch fungus when it’s growing in their nest, but clearly they’ll willingly clean it off of their queen. It’s possible the fungus could have just disappeared or died off but the fact that the queen had fungus the day before the worker eclosed is a pretty sure sign. Anyway, the queens also laid quite a few more eggs and also has a few larvae, one being quite a bit bigger than the others. I have them next to heat so hopefully it shouldn’t be too long before it pupates.

This might just be your only colony that actually makes me jealous. We'll have to blacklight there this summer and see if we find any.

Update 6/4

Good news, the queen hasn’t died and she has received her first pupa! Considering this species is supposed to be relatively slow growing, 3 weeks egg to pupae is amazing. I’m assuming it was mainly because I was keeping her heated and feeding her frequently but still. Seeing how well she’s doing now despite the issues I’ve had with her gives me high hopes for this colony.

Update 6/22

The queens first two workers have arrived! With many more to come. She’s got a nice pile of brood, as well as another worker that’s about to eclose. Since the fungus situation, this colony has had no more problems. They’re growing, eating, and are just doing really well overall.
