Ok so alot of people are telling me about all the cool ants in California, but honestly I can't seem to find many different species. I think my dream species that.. actaully lives here is Pheidole, I like more species in Pheidole more than others, but they are all pretty cool, in my opinion. Where have you guys found Pheidole? Never really see colonies, let alone a queen. Oh and also I live like right near the Bay, which is like 30 or 45 minutes away.

Have you tried looking at night? Also if you are checking only in a city area you may want to go looking somehwere that's less urbanized.

Pheidole are awesome ants. P. Californica are everywhere in my yard. For me, i actually find most of my Pheidole queens in urban sidewalk cracks, rather than sand/dirt. Try taking a walk around your local area, and you'll need to look very carefully, as Pheidole are a very small species. Good luck!

Ants are Pets, not Pests.

-Camponotus sansabeanus

-Camponotus US-CA02

-Camponotus vicinus

-Formica podzolica

-Monomorium spp.

-Pogonomyrmex californicus

-Solenopsis spp.

I find many, many Ph. navigans queens in my area in Orange County. Up North, P. californica is more common, and they fly around now I believe.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

If I'm not mistaken most Pheidole fly at night in the US, so if you are looking during the day that may be why.
