I caught some sort of odd behavior with the larger colonies workers and the bigger egg pile. (Brood growing ritual? ) Also the mini hearth queen has a pupae now as well. (Not pictured.)

Mini hearth queen has new eggs, some larvae, and two pupae. Queen Tauri has tons of brood. 3 of the pupae are noticeably larger than the others. So I expect we are getting majors now. Just have to wait.

Should have new workers any time now. Also spotted another large larvae. So I expect we may get 4 majors here soon. Exciting to see.

The mini hearth colony is bouncing back, and is now back to three workers! Should have more in a few days time. Queen Tauri has at least 3 or 4 majors now, with more on the way.

So I moved the larger colony to the Nucleus I had sitting around. Started the process Friday, they moved over by Saturday afternoon. Also the small mini hearth colony is up to 6 workers now.

I believe by what you're describing is the workers cleaning the eggs. Ants have antibacterial saliva.

Queen Tauri's colony is doing great in their new home. Look at all that brood! The smaller colony I moved to a Fortress.

Small colony is starting to do better. Hoping they'll start catching up this year. Big colony I moved the heat cable a bit to encourage more use of their nucleus.

These colonies are still growing. Queen Tauri has moved into a new chamber (First photo.) Also we might have a drone pupae? It seems longer than any others I've seen of this diameter. (3rd photo.)

If those are drones I'd be very surprised. Its too young of a colony.
#95 Offline - Posted April 21 2022 - 9:18 PM
I've had several colonies produce drones early on. Most often happens when they forget about some trophic eggs and let them develop.
Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I've seen this in my Lasius sp. and some others. However never Camponotus sp. We are gonna find out. Rather interesting.

Yeah, I'm really not sure. Might just be a strange worker too. I'll keep on eye on it and will be sure to post any updates here.

Nuptial flight yesterday. Managed to catch 25 total. Likely a test flight as it was only 74 yesterday.
