Location of collection: Black light in suburb backyard
Date collected: 4/30/21
Habitat: Unknown
Length - 5mm
Coloration: Dark brown in regular sunlight, banding around gaster. Smooth and slightly shiny
Behavior: Nothing of note
Nest description: Unknown
Ran black light in backyard last night (4:30pm - 10pm) and this morning (4:30am - 7:00am) and caught one dealate and an other still with wings (3rd was accidentally crushed while collecting) in collection tub. Saw 3-4, what I believe, were males last night.
If these are queen ants, my first concern is if I need to separate them (they were near each other in the tub, but not touching).
Please let me know if additional info or pictures are needed.
Thank you!

Thank you for the quick response! I promise to research the species more fully, I just found two more, can I add them together for a founding colony of four queens?

yes, though i would keep one queen by herself as a separate colony, just in case something goes wrong and one colony dies.Brachymyrmex patagonicus. Fully claustral and polygynous species.

For reference, this is my black light set up that I built from other people’s examples in this forum. Lots of mosquitos…
Light sources: 2 - 20 watt fluorescent UV bulbs (350nm).
2 - 12 watt 300 led UV strand (385nm - 400nm).

You could catch the Mother Ship with that one!

There was a police helicopter circling nearby the other day and I was joking the same to my wife.

Pretty sure during the morning time frame since he said he caught them on the 30th.

ZTYguy is correct. All I’ve caught (8 thus far) were during 8:30pm - 10:30pm. The last couple of nights have been warm and males have been outnumbering the mosquitos. I have a cheap led UV bar that seems to attract the males better than the “tower rig”! Below is a link, it’s even usb for those that use batteries in remote areas.

That is correct. The first were actually collected in the early am within the collection bucket.
Having said that the next night, there were males and a few queens in the evening. 8pm when the males showed up and ~9:30pm for the queens.
The last two evenings, the males have been outnumbering the mosquitos, but no queens.
