I was wondering if it was ok to order ants from a different area. Would it be ok if they are native, just getting them from a different place? Could I order not native spieces and just be very careful not to let them loose? Any suggestions on this.

You cannot order any species from outside state lines, even if native to both states.

*ALL* species besides Pogonomyrmex occidentalis (Wester Harvester Ants) are illegal to ship over state lines without a permit. If you see Tar Heel Ants selling Formica subsericea across state lines, it is because they have the appropriate permit.

Oh. so would it be ok if I kept non native spieces and be very careful with them?

Or is this a bad idea?

Wait why can't you order them if they are native to both states?

Not at all, yes, and it is because of APHIS and just because a species is native to two areas doesn't mean that it won't have a negative affect on an environment it is introduced to.

It is okay to keep non native species if you find them in your area. Generally, if you are finding them, they are already established. This can be a touchy subject, but I find this to be the most reasonable argument.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

What species? I know there are sellers on Ebay and Etsy who are doing it illegally, but where did you order from?

You cannot order any species from outside state lines, even if native to both states.

You can keep non natives thay are established in your state, but none established in other states. For example, you could keep the invasive tetramorium immigrans, which is established in your state (must still be caught in your state though), but you can't keep something like solenopsis invicta that's only established in other states.

The only inavsive ants in my yard are tetramorium.

I have huge nests in my next door neighbor, and their stings hurt.

I've learnt that the hard way from digging there nests up trying to find the queen.... I was a newbie anter then.

But I can keep them because they are in my area already, am I correct?

Pilifera may be there, but that’s about it. Otherwise you’re out of luck sadly.

Are they *common*. What are the chances I could find some?

I know they fly in Late summer(july, august.).

No northern Pheidole are common as far as I know. They may be locally abundant in places such as pine barrens.

Pheidole get more common the further south you go, it seems. The smaller species are really easy to miss, though.
"The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer." Prov. 30:25
Keep ordinary ants in extraordinary ways.
