I've had my eyes on catching a Camponotus pennsylvanicus queen and I've read that I'd be most likely to find some at night, but I can't say I've had the most pleasant experiences attempting to do this. Disregarding my fear of all the big scary (non-ant) creepy crawlies that come out after sundown (earwigs, centipedes, worms, giant 3cm long beetles mating in the grass that flew at me when I got near), there's also the fact that I got eaten alive by mosquitoes the time I stayed up the longest; I'd wear bug spray, but ignoring the fact I'm not knowledgeable on whether or not that stuff would be harmful to any queens I come across, that sounds counterintuitive to my goal just in general.
