Hello everyone,

So every year (not recently due to the apocalypse happening outside), my family and I visit my other family who lives in California.  I've been thinking to get a permit for the Californian species (someone told me you can get a permit for all the species in a state), so when I go there I can keep any cool ants I find (maybe Myrmecocystus or Acromyrmex, probably not, I'm too lazy to check AntMaps).

If/When I do, is there any special or cool species to look out for during my stay in Orange County?  BTW I do stay during April Vacation, so preferably species that fly that time of year, however any species in the area is alright.  Also sometimes we go to San Diego and Los Angeles county, so also species there.

Thanks in advance,

Chickalo

I think technically it would be your parents permit not yours, but IMO everything in CA is pretty cool.

Well we have Camponotus us-ca02, Myrmecocystus wheeleri, Myrmecocystus testaceus, Myrmecocystus mimicus, Strumigenys sp., Camponotus yogi, and Camponotus essigi. All of these barring the Strumigenys have already flown.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

They are cool, but not on the same level on the species I mentioned. :D  They will always hold a special place for me though, being my first truly successful colony.

Yeah haha I'm not 18 yet so it would be my parents.  Also, so no Acromyrmex in Cali?

Acromyrmex versicolor live in Cali but I don't know how easy they are to find.

A. versicolor are not found in Orange County, hence why I did not mention them. They are found deep into the desert though.

From old posts it appears mots people caught their Acromyrmex in Cali in Joshua Tree National Park, which is over a 2 hour drive from our usual hotel, so I'll ask my parents to drive me there in the rental car lol, probably will be a no so I'll have to stick to Orange.  I'll try to bring my phone around with me to take photos and send them to Something or Cheeto to get ID (or anyone else who can do it lol)

When are you going up? I heard it can take a long time to get the permit.

Okay, can someone give me a step by step tutorial on getting the PPQ 526 permit and how to make an account, because neither me or my mom knows how to apply for a permit lol (also does it cost money)
