In late July I was doing inflatable pool stuff when I noticed a large number of long/skinny gastered alates of a reddish orange colour busy dying, which led me to wonder what a Queen looked like: I had not long to wonder (I think?). I saw a large, shiny blackish ant with a bit of a russet patch on her underside and reddish legs just kinda moseying along, so I tubed her.

After checking for life after 72 hours, I forgot about her for a week As Is Only Proper and Good. I checked in and found her guarding a wee pearly treasure! People Who Should Know have guessed she is a Lasius variant, so maybe she is that thing? We shall see! If anyone has input I am ready to read!

I peeped at My Lady Lasius yesternight to check for life and she is indeed alive and gloating over a large egg pile.

I will try to take pics of the pile soon but I am so nervous about giving her a complex I haven't had her out since the first photo session. 😅

I am hoping her workers will help me narrow down her spp.

I counted 11! They've been given Baby's First Outworld with a droplet of pure honey and a lump of cat food about the size of My Lady. She is so excited at the idea of Real Food she has forgotten herself so far as to begin leaving the nest chamber to go chow down. Both times she seems to recollect that Queens Do Not Fetch Their Own Food (a lie, yes, but we all have our illusions), and ran back to the shelter of her pupae

So, whatever Lasius variant I have falls under the Black garden ant type, so that narrows it down?

There appear to be a handful more adults and a veritable mountain of brood. They like honey so far and they have eaten a housefly
