I haven't collected a queen, but that is my goal. Don't know if it'll happen, but I see these beautiful ants right outside my place of work everyday.
1. Location of collection: Mandaree, ND
2. Date of collection: 6/4/2015
3. Habitat of collection: nesting in rocky blacktop and concrete.
4. Length (from head to gaster):5mm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: orangey red, beige/black to gold gaster
6. Distinguishing characteristics: in sunlight they look like tiny walking gold nuggets.
7. Anything else distinctive: very docile, can pick up and mess with them but still remain calm.
8. Nest description: prefer to live under blacktop and concrete.

Can you get a good side picture?

Yeah Dakotas! Greetings from Eastern ND!
As for the ants ... I only see those in Theodore Roosevelt Nat'l Park ... Formica montana I always thought was a bit darker, and not as reddish as these are.
