How much substrate for a 20 Gallon Long tank for Pheidole Dentata?
note, I reccomend you not only use sand, and if you do, add some clay soil into it so it doesn't collapse so easily.
From my understanding these are indeed a fast growing species but not to an extent that they would require such a large formicarium setup. However to each his own. You could most certainly create an amazing setup with this size tank. In answer to the topic question, it is generally preffered to take soil from the area these ants nest in, so that you can be sure the tunnels most likely will not collapse.
Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).
