Pheidole pilifera are hard to find in general,  I don't know if having only that species in your state makes it easier or harder to find them to be honest. Go to a nice warm place that has big lights, like maybe the tennis court at a park, after it rains you should go at night and try to find some.

Nahant is supposed to be a good place to look for Pheidole, they like sandy soil

It is okay to keep non native species if you find them in your area. Generally, if you are finding them, they are already established. This can be a touchy subject, but I find this to be the most reasonable argument.

 

I agree with you.  There is nothing wrong with keeping them if they were caught locally, regardless of whether they are native or not.

While ordering lego civil war figures because I mean, why not, they look cool, I saw you could buy Argentine ants, you know, those highly invasive ants, and this to me was not ok. I might contact the seller about it. I mean people shouldn't be selling Argentine ants nevermind any not native species, but this didn't feel right to me.

Wait why can't you order them if they are native to both states?

 

You cannot order any species from outside state lines, even if native to both states.

While ordering lego civil war figures because I mean, why not, they look cool, I saw you could buy Argentine ants, you know, those highly invasive ants, and this to me was not ok. Were you looking on ebay? There were a lot more species on there and they all got removed, even the ones that were listed later.

Its possible the "Messor" were Veromessor. The Genus name change was relatively recent, and they do look very similar. But I honestly have no idea why anyone would want Linepithema humile. Even Boringmyrmex insanus is better!

My guess is a combination of ease of capture and overconfident keepers who think they can reliably stop the Argentines from escaping. Also, I may not be from the California area, but why do you call D. insanus boring?

They are everywhere, look quite similar to Linepithema, have no interesting features, and are difficult to raise.

1. Yes it's completely fine in my opinion, it's not like there's any harm in just having them as long as they don't get out. It's a bad idea if you're irresponsible and aren't good at containing ants.

 

2. I don't think anyone actually knows, but it's just easier for the government to do a blanket ban on everything.

Just checked Etsy, and it looks like they took down all the illegal European ant queens they had listed. I wrote a ton a reports to them to complain.
