I was going to wait until someone brought up thief ants, It could be a smaller species in solenopsis, I'm working on something about species in states so when I get around to massachusetts ill have a better understanding of what was in your state and what is in it now.

Just so you know, color is a horrible identifier for some species. Color can vary from location to location. I had a S. molesta queen who was gold.

Solenopsis molesta queens are definitely a yellow/gold. They're also the same size as Ph. tysoni queens.

They are way smaller then fire ants. The queens are barely bigger then my my pinky fingernail. The workers are 1/4 of the size of the queen.

And they produce a lot of eggs.

And they are a goldish color. But yeah. I've never seen any common pheidole in MA.

In case you didn't know, Solenopsis molesta are solenopsis, but are very tiny. they also go by the name thief ants.

Ants I am keeping:

none for now, planning on being more active this year

well the queens still aren't the right color.

Idk maybe. Do they live up north?

I will make this journal disconntinued and start a new one if the speices ends up being the theif ant.

But I've never seen theif ants before in the wild so this is new( and for me to get the ID wrong.)

Solenopsis molesta range up into Canada, and are a golden/brown in color, just the same as Ph. tysoni.

I didn't want to move in case any of the queens get injured or they lose all their brood, or they just die in their new enviroment. They seem pretty happy in their tube right now.

ok. I will look out for new queens.

But is hard to keep the tube from molding.
