One of the best ant subfamilies. Large ponerines in particular are amazing, such as odontomachus or neoponera.

I found a Neoponera villosa today in Austin -- I didn't know what it was at the time, so I tried to carry it back home in my hand. Turns out it has quite painful stings haha

 

I think the Ponerines are very cool -- they are a very successful tribe

1X Pogonomyrmex occidentalis 40-50 Workers

1X Solenopsis molesta 10 Workers (mono)

Ants I Want: Crematogaster sp, Camponotus Sp., Ponera Pennsylvanica, Mymercocystus sp.

paraponera isn’t a ponerine. It’s in its own subfamily, paraponerinae.

Yes, those are Ponerines.


Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

what about hypoponera?
that's a true ponerine. Some other genera that look and sound like ponerines but aren’t are ectatomma, rhytidoponera (both of these are subfamily ectatomminae), heteroponera (heteroponerinae), lioponera (dorylinae) tetraponera (pseudomyrmecinae) and amblyopone (amblyoponinae)
