I bought several clear food pans (fourth size 27.3 x 20 x 10.2 centimeters ) and trying to make an ant nest with 2 pans (1 to build the nest and 1 to cover it). The plan is to make a small founding chamber and some other chambers that can be opened to the colony when needed.
I used 1:1 grout and perlite (maybe a little too absorbent) for the bottom part for chambers and 1:1 grout and sand for the top part as a foraging area. The founding chamber has a small plastic water tower that connects to the water channel at the bottom of the food pan. There are cracks on the nest because I removed the modeling clay while the nest is still wet.
My questions are:
1. Should I keep the founding chamber water tower connected to the bottom water channel or should I block the connection and add water separately?
2. Do I need to use an air pump to blow fresh air into the nest?
