I have heard that pheidole is known to collect seeds and make granaries. I have tried feeding them nuts and chia seeds, but they were not accepted. Does anyone know what type of seeds pheidole like?

I’m sort of disappointed how little they like seeds, to be honest.

Really? I saw Ants Australia's video, and I kind of thought that they would eat seeds and nuts a lot.

It all depends on the species.

Do you have any experience with Pheidole Californica.

They are not native in Eastern US. You might want to try chia seeds, I've seen some ant keepers successfully feed pheidole with it, not sure about P. Californica though.

I guess my colony might just be to small. I tried all those options with no luck. I guess I will just keep trying then. They are sure to like something sooner or later.

Do they have majors? They could be waiting until they have majors so they can chop them up and such.

I noticed when feeding sunflower seeds to my Pheidole that when they were a young colony, they were not excited about them, and even now, they are not, but there is always a worker chewing away at the sunflower. I really think seeds are not their number one choice(at least in the case of my navigans colony), and that they only eat seeds when they don't have anything else.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

They do have quite a few majors.
